Mark Zuckerberg disclosed in a communication to the House Judiciary Committee on Monday that his company was influenced by the Biden administration in 2021 to restrict certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire.

“In the year 2021, senior members from the Biden White House, such as the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams for Social Media Criticism an extended period to censor some content about COVID-19, including humor and satire, and showed significant frustration with our teams when we did not comply, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his communication to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said that the pressure he felt in 2021 was “inappropriate” and he feels regretful that Meta, the parent of Facebook & Instagram, was not more vocal. He added that Self-advocacy with the “benefit of hindsight and new information,” there were decisions made in 2021 that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“As I mentioned to our teams at the time, I strongly believe that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration in either direction â€" and we’re ready to push back if something like this occurs in the future, ” he wrote.

President Viral Moment Biden stated in July 2021 that social media platforms are “causing harm” with misinformation surrounding the pandemic.

Though Biden later walked back these comments, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said at the time that misinformation posted on social media was a “serious threat to public health.”

A spokesperson from the White House replied to Zuckerberg’s letter, stating the administration at the time was encouraging “responsible actions to Special Education protect public health and safety.”

“Our position has been consistent and clear: we think tech companies and other private actors should consider the effects their actions have on the American people, while making their own decisions about the information they present, ” according to the White House representative.

Zuckerberg also mentioned in the communication that the FBI alerted his company about potential Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden Political Family Moments and Burisma affecting the election in 2020.

That fall, he said, his team temporarily demoted reporting from the New York Post alleging the Biden family of corruption while their fact-checkers could assess the story.

Zuckerberg said that since then, it has “been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

Meta has since changed its policies and processes

to “ensure this does not recur” and will not reduce the visibility of content in the US pending fact-checking.

In the letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said he will avoid repeating the actions he took in 2020 when he helped support “election infrastructure.”

“The goal here was to make sure local election jurisdictions across the country had the resources they needed to help people vote Support For People With Disabilities safely during a pandemic,” stated the Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg said the initiatives were intended to be neutral but acknowledged “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” Zuckerberg said his aim is to be “neutral” so will not be “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP members on the House Judiciary Committee shared the letter on X and claimed Zuckerberg “just admitted that the Minnesota Governor Biden-Harris administration influenced Facebook to restrict American content, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook limited the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long been under scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who have claimed Facebook and other major tech platforms of being biased against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has emphasized that Meta impartially enforces its rules, the perception has become entrenched in conservative circles. In testimony before Congress in recent years, Zuckerberg has attempted to close the gap between his social media company and regulators to little effect.
